Paying for Sports

I read in the AJC that parents are required to pay dues for their kids to play sports. WTF ! It says the fees covers SALARIES, equipment, etc. Where the heck are my tax dollars going. Oh yeah, tax dollars can not be used to pay for schools sports.

What are your thoughts ?

I mean I can understand that I want my tax dollars to go towards the teachers salary before sports. I mean thats extra stuff if you want your child to be in it pay for it.

But I would care more about the education of my child rather then sports I can put them in a community center program or something like that if its that important to me.

True, you do need to pony up some money for uniforms and travel expenses if you are going to have your son/daughter on sport team with their school, but some of the dues are getting outrageous. I have heard about band fees at some ATL area high schools being in excess of $300-$400 on top of the price of their instrument. Do lab fees go toward paying the science teachers salary?

I don't mind the fact that there is a fee due for the sports its the cost of the dues that concerns me. I do not understand why its so freakin expensive for the kiddies. I mean really. Most parents want their children to be active. Most parents are living paycheck to paycheck also. So I think the dues should be affordable. I think its a shame that we have to neglect our kids because of things like that. It's not fair to them!

ConRonda .. I totally agree. They forget that we all having financial difficulties and the people that get hurt in the whole situation are the children. This is a mess. I am in Florida and some schools cannot even transport students to the other venues because of this. Very sad.

I had to pay $130 for my daughter to participate in swimming. That fee included the cost of using a community center pool (her school doesn't have an indoor pool, like mine did...darn). Now when I had to pay this fee, gas was over $4/gallon and my pockets were hurting a bit from many other expenses.

Unfortunately, that does not include swim cap/goggles/bathing suit. The monogrammed bathing suit is approx $60.

Fortunately, if she doesn't make team I can get my money back. Overall, this price wasn't too bad and there was an option for some payment arrangements, if I needed it.
